Young adults in North Hartford face unique challenges—but one organization is meeting them where they are and opening doors for brighter futures.
Meet Young Legends—a dynamic youth-led program under United Way, working to connect local residents (ages 16-29) with education, jobs, and leadership opportunities. Their mission: increase employment rates, build job readiness, and empower young people as community leaders.
Their work with North Hartford Ascend has been transformative. Through initiatives like the Navigation Hub, Young Legends collaborated with career navigators, family navigators, and other agencies to help youth and families access jobs, financial literacy resources, and more. In just four months, the pilot program served nearly 30 young adults—offering tailored job support, mentoring, and career coaching.
One of Young Legends’ greatest strengths is its focus on peer leadership. Alumni who complete the program often return as mentors, giving back to their community and helping new members thrive. Their upcoming Leadership Academy will continue that legacy by training the next wave of youth leaders.
When asked about the key needs in North Hartford, Young Legends members were clear:

- Improved transportation to work and programs
- More safe spaces for youth
- Stronger community outreach to build trust
